Performance of Gender

Solo exhibition by Sarah McBride

Performance of Gender explores gender as something performed rather than fixed, using the experiences and representation of cross-dressers as its central focus.

Drawing on Judith Butler’s idea that gender is produced through repeated acts and social expectations, the exhibition considers how clothing, appearance and behaviour shape the ways gender is recognised and understood.

For cross-dressers, dressing beyond conventional gender expectations can be an expression of identity, but can also attract scrutiny, ridicule and discrimination. The exhibition considers what cross-dressing reveals about the performance of gender and the consequences of moving beyond its expected boundaries.

Through painting, collage, mirrors and sculpture, Sarah McBride examines the relationship between identity, the body, clothing and visibility.
